21-May-2014 Denver – SBA’s Region VIII is proud to announce the 2014 Region VIII Winner of the Small Business Development Center Excellence and Innovation Award.

The mission of the Colorado Springs Small Business Development Center (SBDC) is to assist small businesses to grow and prosper. Over the last two years, the Colorado Springs area has experienced two devastating fires, flooding and is expecting to experience another round of flooding as the 2014 spring thaw progresses. Ms. Aikta Marcoulier and her team responded with a disaster relief program to help businesses with relief, recovery and preparedness through consulting; preparedness workshops and the first annual Business Protection Summit and Resource Day.

“During the Waldo Canyon and Black Forest fires, the Colorado Springs SBDC jumped right in with volunteers to provide relief and recovery assistance” said Matt Varilek, SBA’s Region VIII Administrator. “Their efforts went beyond our expectations and we are now very proud to recognize them throughout Region VIII.”

Kelly Manning, State Director for the Colorado Small Business Development Center network added, “We are thrilled Colorado Springs is receiving this amazing award. Leadership, compassion, and professionalism are three adjectives that describe the efforts of this center through all the terrible disasters in Colorado. Colorado Springs truly stepped up for the state and our businesses are better today due to those efforts.”

In addition to responding to disasters, the Colorado Springs SBDC expanded their consulting and facilitator staff by 20; expanded their existing Veterans Program, conducted workshops on the Affordable Care Act and Connect For Health Colorado.

Said Colorado District Director Greg Lopez, “Aikta and her team continue to be on the forefront of disaster relief for the Colorado Springs area. When the disasters occurred, the Colorado Springs SBDC was immediately ready to assist small businesses with information and resources they desperately needed.”

The Colorado Springs Small Business Development Center will be honored at a local event in the near future.
